PPS hosting first ever CTE signing day

Portsmouth Public Schools hosting first-ever Career and Technical Education Signing Day

Portsmouth Public Schools (PPS) will be celebrating students who are entering the workforce following graduation with the division’s first-ever Career and Technical Education Signing Day. The event will take place Wednesday, June 5, at 6 p.m., at Woodrow Wilson High School.

“One of the incredible offerings of public education today is our ability to tailor a child’s educational program to meet the exact needs of employers for the workforce of tomorrow,” said Dr. Elie Bracy III, superintendent of Portsmouth Public Schools. “We are thrilled to be able to honor our students who have excelled in these pathways, who are not only prepared for their jobs, they are already gainfully employed.”

Mirrored after the National Signing Day, an event held each April to celebrate student-athletes signing their commitment to attend the college of their choice on an athletic scholarship, the Career and Technical Education Signing Day will honor the students who have already secured jobs in their desired field based on the education and training received in PPS.

At the Signing Day, students will be joined by their future employers as they make official their post-graduation plans. Also during the event, students throughout the division who earned an industry credential (a recognized credential by industries used and/or needed for hiring, retaining or promoting staff) while in schools will also be recognized.

PPS has a robust Career and Technical Education (CTE) program for students. All three high school campuses offer courses and pathways in careers including Auto CAD, cosmetology, culinary arts, cybersecurity, early childhood education, horticulture, nail tech, nursing, pharmacy tech, sports medicine, television and media production, and welding. In addition, the division has an ongoing partnership with the Tidewater Community College Portsmouth Campus to offer First College, which provides workforce skills and credential opportunities to students to prepare them for additional careers.
